A few years ago, the idea of a Sunderland player being compared to Barcelona and Spain superstars might have seemed far-fetched, almost like a scenario from a Football Manager simulation. However, thanks to the efforts of Sunderland’s coaching staff, from the academy to the first team, Chris Rigg is now recognized as one of the brightest young talents in not just English football, but worldwide.
The Guardian’s annual list of the “best young talents in world football” features many familiar names, including Lamine Yamal, the Barcelona prodigy who played a key role in Spain’s European Championship victory this summer. Defender Pau Cubarsi also stands out, alongside notable players like Franco Mastantuono from River Plate and Manchester United’s Chido-Obi Martin.
Rigg, at just 17, is one of the few players on the list consistently starting in first-team matches, and he is the only one contracted to a club in the Championship. According to The Guardian, Rigg is “very much the heartbeat” of Sunderland’s promotion-chasing squad, even outshining his talented teammate Jobe Bellingham.
Sunderland is wisely avoiding comparisons between their two teenage stars, as Rigg and Bellingham form a formidable midfield alongside 22-year-old veteran Dan Neil. Rigg has started the last eight Championship matches and is beginning to add goals to his repertoire, including a stunning backheel winner against Middlesbrough and a well-executed finish in a recent 2-2 draw with Leeds United.
Sporting director Kristjaan Speakman aims to manage expectations for Rigg. However, former coach Steven Richardson, who observed Rigg’s development at Hebburn Town’s Futsal team, is not surprised by his success. “He’s so calm and collected. He knows his worth, and that confidence is beneficial,” Richardson shared. “Sunderland have an absolute gem in him. He always gives his all, and his stamina is remarkable.”
Rigg will likely be a key player for Sunderland when they face Hull City as the Championship season resumes this weekend.
