A year later, Guglielmo Vicario’s move from Empoli to Tottenham for €20 million is proving beneficial for both him and the club. The 28-year-old has emerged as one of the top goalkeepers in English football, successfully securing a place in the Italy squad and earning a starting position.
After being sidelined during the summer’s European Championships, where Luciano Spalletti favored Gianluigi Donnarumma, Vicario made his third appearance for Italy in the recent 4-1 UEFA Nations League victory over Israel.
Legendary AC Milan goalkeeper Filippo Galli believes Donnarumma should now be looking over his shoulder. “Vicario has established himself as a top starter,” Galli remarked. “He is ready and very strong. Without a doubt, he should be Italy’s number one.”
Galli, a five-time Serie A champion, noted that Vicario has a certain elegance reminiscent of David de Gea, which he feels Donnarumma lacks. “Donnarumma is very good, but he doesn’t have that touch of elegance,” Galli stated.
