To compete for a top-four spot, Spurs must find more consistency, especially after their recent 3-2 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion before the international break.
As they prepare to return to action, Paul Merson has identified a “worrying trend” in the team’s performance this season. He observed that the Tottenham players are not supporting each other enough during challenging moments.
In their match against Brighton, Spurs were leading 2-0 with goals from Brennan Johnson and James Maddison but collapsed in the second half, conceding three goals and losing the match. Merson noted that this pattern of failing to maintain composure has been evident in multiple games, including their encounter with Leicester.
“Tottenham looked impressive for 45 minutes against Brighton but reverted to their old ways in the 3-2 loss,” Merson wrote in his column for Sportskeeda. “The ‘Spursy’ label just won’t go away! They had a comfortable lead, but once they conceded, it was as if no one wanted to step up. This is a concerning issue for Ange Postecoglou.”
Merson emphasized the need for the players to take more initiative during tough times to prevent collapses like the one against Brighton. He remarked, “Spurs crumble too easily under pressure, and we’ve seen it happen twice already this October. They were likely fielding their best team against Brighton, and there’s not much wrong with that lineup.”
He added that while the players shine when things are going well, they tend to shy away from the ball when facing adversity, which is problematic.
As they gear up to face West Ham United, Tottenham must address their inconsistency. Despite some standout performances, like their 3-0 victory over Manchester United, Postecoglou described the loss to Brighton as one of his toughest moments as manager. With three points and local pride on the line, Spurs need a strong response to avoid derailing their season early.
