Tottenham Hotspur secured their third consecutive win in the Europa League on Thursday night, overcoming AZ with a 1-0 victory.
While it wasn’t their best performance, Spurs got the crucial goal through a penalty from Richarlison in the 53rd minute. The spot kick was awarded after AZ’s Maxim Dekker fouled Lucas Bergvall in the box.
Richarlison, starting for the first time this season, engaged in a brief discussion with James Maddison over who would take the penalty. Ultimately, Maddison, who captained the team, decided to let Richarlison take it. This proved to be a wise choice, as Richarlison confidently converted the penalty.
However, former player Glenn Hoddle criticized Richarlison’s actions, labeling them as “unprofessional.” Speaking to TNT Sports, Hoddle noted, “It’s great that Richarlison scored, but it felt a bit unprofessional to take the ball from Maddison. If he were to miss, it could have been a different story.”
Maddison later commented that he was glad to let Richarlison take the penalty, believing it could help boost his confidence after recovering from injury. “Initially, we both wanted it, but I thought it would be beneficial for Richarlison to score his first goal,” Maddison explained. “It was a quick decision, and I believe it was the right one for the team.”
Coach Ange Postecoglou had a straightforward response, saying, “As long as they score, I couldn’t care less. It’s important they sort it out themselves.”
