Simon Jordan has addressed discussions about Eddie Howe being under pressure at Newcastle United, emphasizing the growing challenges the club faces in expanding beyond its current limitations. There are suggestions that Howe’s position is increasingly precarious following a slow start to the season, leaving Newcastle in 12th place in the Premier League.
As the team prepares for an important Carabao Cup match against Chelsea at St James’ Park, some observers believe Howe needs to secure a trophy for both the club’s owners and its fans, particularly given their previous success in reaching the final two seasons ago.
Jordan, however, points to the uneven playing field Newcastle and its Saudi owners contend with. New regulations, partly instituted after the Newcastle takeover, have altered the landscape for clubs aiming to invest heavily, unlike past Premier League champions like Blackburn Rovers, Chelsea, and Manchester City.
“They have been constrained by not having the same opportunities that Blackburn, Chelsea, and Manchester City once had,” Jordan said on talkSPORT. “Legislation and restrictions around APT, introduced after the Newcastle acquisition, have limited their ability to replicate what Manchester City and Chelsea achieved, especially after Abramovich’s arrival in 2003.”
Jordan acknowledged that while Newcastle’s financial situation has improved under Howe, the current expectations are perhaps unfair compared to the spending power of Manchester City and Chelsea. He admitted, however, that if Newcastle does not improve its league standing, Howe may struggle to keep his job.
“The challenge for Eddie now is clear. If they finish 12th this season, I would say he won’t remain in charge,” he added. “I genuinely like Eddie, and my opinion of him has evolved over the years. The real issue for Newcastle is figuring out how to break the cycle and compete with other teams.”
“Newcastle can’t grow because they can’t make significant purchases. Without substantial investment, it’s tough for them to achieve what Manchester City has done. Without that level of cash, City wouldn’t dominate English football as they do now.”
