Irrelevant’ – Eddie Howe’s blunt response to Mikel Arteta’s Newcastle United claim after Arsenal win

For the second consecutive season, Arsenal suffered a 1-0 defeat at St James’ Park. Last year, Anthony Gordon scored the lone goal, and this time, he assisted Alexander Isak, who headed in the winner in the 12th minute.

Despite having more possession, the Gunners struggled to penetrate Newcastle’s defense, marking their third loss in four matches. Meanwhile, Newcastle ended a five-game winless streak in the Premier League.

Arteta remarked, “We started the game well, looking sharp and in control, but one moment with an incredible cross and finish changed the momentum.

“They have a clear game plan, and we got drawn into that style of play. When we fell behind, we lacked purpose and threat, allowing them sustained attacks and conceding 17 or 18 free-kicks, which disrupts the game. This is not a good outcome for us. They executed their strategy effectively, and we got caught up in it.”

When asked about Arteta’s comments, Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe responded, “I don’t pay much attention to what anyone else says, other than my team. We focus on ourselves amidst the external noise, striving to win games consistently.

“This season has been inconsistent for us; we’ve had good moments and not-so-good ones. Recently, our performance levels have improved, and we’ve started to see rewards for that. Now, we need to maintain this momentum.”

Howe added, “Everyone contributed to today’s win. It’s been a great few days for us, illustrating how quickly football can change—with two strong performances against excellent teams. Today was built on the qualities we’ve shown historically—heart, determination, desire, and quality. It’s a good day for us.”
