Mikel Arteta believes his team was “dragged into” Newcastle United’s game plan during their match at St James’ Park this afternoon.
Arsenal fell 1-0 to Newcastle, with Alexander Isak scoring just 12 minutes into the game. The Swedish striker’s goal marked his third in as many games, securing all three points for Eddie Howe’s side.
This defeat marked the third time in four visits to St James’ Park that Arteta has faced a loss against Newcastle in a spirited matchup. Although Arsenal dominated possession, they struggled to test Nick Pope in goal, relying heavily on set pieces for any chance of a comeback.
In a notably more subdued post-match press conference than after their previous season’s defeat—where Arteta called the decision that led to Anthony Gordon’s winner a “disgrace”—he expressed that his team was often playing into Newcastle’s hands.
“We started the game well, looked sharp and were on top, but one moment with an incredible cross and finish changed the momentum,” he said. “You know the type of game they want to play; it’s clear. You can easily get pulled into that style, and we weren’t good enough. Credit to them for executing their game plan.”
Arteta noted that after going behind, his team struggled to find purpose and lacked a real threat. “In transition, we allowed them to sustain attacks and gave away 17 or 18 free-kicks, which constantly interrupted the game. It’s not a good outcome for us. They excel at their strategy, and we got caught up in it today.”
With this defeat, Arsenal has now lost three matches in the Premier League this season and is winless in their last three outings, having lost to Bournemouth two weeks ago and drawn against Liverpool last weekend. Newcastle, who were winless in their last five games before Saturday, now sit just three points behind Arsenal ahead of their trip to face Nottingham Forest next weekend.
