Arsenal has officially announced the departure of Edu Gaspar as Sporting Director, with the former Gunners midfielder seeking “a new challenge.” Edu submitted his resignation on Monday, reportedly aiming to embark on a fresh venture within the network of Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis.
While Edu’s departure has come as a surprise, Arsenal has been aware of Marinakis’s interest for several weeks, with concerns that Edu might leave for a more financially rewarding opportunity.
Edu described his decision to leave the club as “incredibly hard,” and his exit is seen as a significant loss for Arsenal, given his pivotal role in recruiting Mikel Arteta as manager in 2019 and overseeing major transfers, including the club-record £105m signing of Declan Rice last year. Arteta referred to their collaboration as a “beautiful journey,” and club officials have stressed that there was no conflict or power struggle behind Edu’s resignation.
Arsenal released a statement confirming Edu’s resignation: “Edu Gaspar has today resigned from his position as our Sporting Director.”
The statement continued by highlighting his journey at the club: “Edu, our former player and Invincible, re-joined us as Technical Director in July 2019. He was promoted to Sporting Director in November 2022, overseeing men’s, women’s, and academy football.”
