“Premier League’s Controversial Call on Nottingham Forest vs. Newcastle United After Shocking Double Ban
Newcastle United have bounced back with consecutive victories, ending a five-match winless streak in the Premier League with a crucial win over Arsenal at the weekend. Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest sit third in the table, four points ahead of their visitors, having won three matches in a row, despite manager Nuno Espirito Santo serving a three-match touchline ban during that run.
Santo, who previously managed Wolves and Spurs, was handed the ban after protesting Morgan Gibbs-White’s red card during Forest’s draw with Brighton last month. Referee Rob Jones initially believed Gibbs-White had won the ball in a tackle, but after being advised by the fourth official, Anthony Taylor, Jones reversed his decision and issued a second yellow to the midfielder. This led to Santo’s red card for his protests.
Taylor, who was the fourth official in that match, will referee Sunday’s clash between Nottingham Forest and Newcastle. Gibbs-White, who also received a ban following his red card, has since returned to action.
In addition to Santo’s suspension, Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis was also handed a five-match ban by the FA for improper conduct after Forest’s defeat to Fulham in September. Marinakis has already served three of those matches and recently lost an appeal, meaning he will be absent from Sunday’s game.
The FA statement read: “An Appeal Board has dismissed an appeal by Nottingham Forest’s Evangelos Marinakis in relation to misconduct at their Premier League fixture on Saturday, 28 September, against Fulham. It was alleged that Marinakis’ behaviour around the tunnel area after full-time was improper. He denied the charge, but it was found proven, and a five-match stadium/ground suspension was imposed.”
Santo will return to the dugout on Sunday for a match that also features Chris Wood and Elliot Anderson facing their former clubs. Eddie Howe’s side will be looking to close the gap to just one point behind Forest with a win, heading into the international break.
