Liverpool have won 14 of their 16 matches across all competitions this season and are currently leading their Champions League group following a dominant 4-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday.
Despite the team’s near-perfect start, with only one loss and one draw in their campaign so far, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk emphasizes that there is still much work to be done. The 4-0 triumph over Leverkusen capped off an impressive run, but Van Dijk is determined not to let early success breed complacency.
“We are happy with how things are going, but our goal is to be happy at the end of the season,” Van Dijk said. “That requires consistent effort every day, improving, and addressing areas that still need work. We all recognize that there’s a lot we can still improve on, and the manager is very focused on that as well.”
“We’re still a work in progress,” he continued. “The manager has clear ideas about how he wants us to defend, and we’re working hard to implement that and resolve issues on the field. It’s not always perfect, but the key is our willingness to defend. When the opposition breaks our press, we quickly regroup to limit their chances.”
Although Liverpool’s results have been largely positive so far, Van Dijk acknowledged that there’s always room for improvement. “We’re in a good place now, but we’re still growing, and that can only be a positive.”
Liverpool are currently at the top of the newly expanded 36-team Champions League group stage, alongside Aston Villa, who are also undefeated. Former Liverpool player Xabi Alonso, now managing Leverkusen, has praised the Reds as one of Europe’s elite teams.
With qualification for the last 16 well within reach, Liverpool are aiming to avoid a play-off round by finishing among the top eight in their group. A major clash with Real Madrid at Anfield is on the horizon in three weeks. Before that, Liverpool will travel to Tyneside to face Newcastle on December 4, just days after a Premier League showdown with Manchester City and a Champions League meeting with Madrid.
