“Hugely disappointing”- Ange Postecoglou ripped into his players and accused Ipswich of taking ‘strategic time-outs’ during their impressive win over Tottenham.
Ange Postecoglou criticized his players after Tottenham’s disappointing 2-1 defeat to Ipswich, accusing them of failing to perform and claiming that Ipswich used “strategic time-outs” to disrupt the flow of the game. Ipswich secured their first Premier League win of the season thanks to goals from Sam Szmodics and Liam Delap.
Szmodics opened the scoring with a superb overhead kick, capitalizing on Tottenham’s disorganized defense as they struggled to clear Jens Cajuste’s cross. Delap doubled Ipswich’s lead before halftime, pouncing on another defensive error to score from close range.
Tottenham responded in the second half with a goal from Rodrigo Bentancur, but despite creating chances, they couldn’t find an equalizer, and Ipswich held on for all three points. Postecoglou was scathing in his assessment of Tottenham’s performance, expressing frustration with his team’s slow start and lack of consistency.
“It’s hugely disappointing,” he said. “We started slow and passively, giving ourselves a mountain to climb. In the second half, we had chances but didn’t do enough to win the game. The responsibility lies with me—I’m not getting consistent performances from the players, and that’s something I need to address.”
The Tottenham manager also took issue with Ipswich’s tactics, suggesting that their players went down with apparent injuries to disrupt the flow and break up the game. “It seems to be the way the Premier League is going,” Postecoglou added. “Clubs are taking strategic time-outs, and we just have to deal with it. It’s up to the officials.”
Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna, meanwhile, was full of praise for his players after the historic win, their first Premier League victory since 2002. “The journey to get here has been a big one,” he said. “It feels special today. We’ve been improving, and this win validates that. The first half was everything we wanted—good balance, a mix of tempo and control. In the second half, we showed great resilience, defended well, and remained a threat on the counter. It was a top performance.”
