What a MASSIVE Blow to Spurs”- Tottenham star handed seven-game ban to miss Liverpool Premier League clash
Tottenham Hotspur have suffered a setback as Rodrigo Bentancur has been handed a seven-match ban by the Football Association. The midfielder will therefore miss the upcoming Premier League clash against Liverpool at home next month.
Before turning their attention to the trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Liverpool will have a series of domestic and European fixtures to manage. However, they now have advance notice of one key player who will be unavailable for the hosts.
The FA imposed the ban following an investigation that began earlier this year. Bentancur was charged with an “aggravated breach” of the FA’s rules for comments made in Spanish during a TV appearance in Uruguay, in which he criticized his Spurs teammate Son Heung-min.
The issue, which initially sparked controversy in England, has now been resolved with the midfielder set to miss the next seven domestic games for Tottenham, including the December 22 Premier League fixture against Liverpool. This will be the final match in which Bentancur is sidelined, giving Liverpool a slight advantage.
Although the match is still some time away, Bentancur’s absence adds to a growing list of sidelined Spurs players, with Micky van de Ven, Timo Werner, Richarlison, and Wilson Odobert all currently unavailable.
The December 22 fixture will mark Liverpool’s first return to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium since their last visit in the Premier League, a controversial match in which a legitimate Luis Diaz goal was disallowed due to a VAR “human error,” and both Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota were controversially sent off. In stoppage time, a late Tottenham goal handed Liverpool their first defeat of the 2023/24 season.
