Tottenham Hotspur have certainly put their fans through a rollercoaster this season. One moment, they’re thrashing Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford, and the next, they’re losing to Crystal Palace and Ipswich Town, who were both looking for their first Premier League wins of the season.
Under Ange Postecoglou, Spurs have brought back a brand of exciting football that fans remember fondly. However, inconsistency remains an issue, and while the manager deserves credit for revitalizing the team, these lapses could ultimately cost them as the season progresses. Some of the players, such as Radu Dragusin, simply haven’t been up to the task. With that in mind, Daniel Levy and the Spurs hierarchy may need to consider bringing in a replacement in 2025, and potentially one who could arrive for free.
Dragusin’s Struggles So Far
While Dragusin hasn’t been the only reason for Spurs’ struggles, his performances have certainly contributed to their woes. On his European debut against Qarabağ FK, a match Spurs should have won comfortably, he was sent off within the first 10 minutes. Luckily, his teammates rallied, securing the win and sparing him from significant criticism. However, Dragusin’s missteps continued in their loss to Galatasaray, where he made multiple unnecessary fouls and poor decisions, including a bad touch that led to Victor Osimhen’s opening goal. He struggled again in the Premier League against Ipswich, earning a disappointing 3/10 rating from respected Spurs writer Alasdair Gold.
Given these continued errors, it’s difficult to see Dragusin improving significantly as the season unfolds. As such, it might be wise for Spurs to look for an upgrade, and fortunately, they may already have an ideal replacement in mind.
Jonathan Tah: A Potential Upgrade
One player who could be an excellent addition to Spurs is Jonathan Tah. The 28-year-old Bayer Leverkusen defender has been linked with a move to Tottenham, with reports indicating that the club have already held discussions with intermediaries about a potential transfer. Even better, Tah’s £45k-per-week contract is set to expire next summer, meaning he could be available on a free transfer. From January, Spurs can negotiate a pre-agreement with him, and it’s a move that makes perfect sense.
Tah, standing at 6’5″, is well-suited to the physical demands of the Premier League. Nicknamed the “battleship” by former teammate Christoph Kramer, his experience is invaluable. He has played for several top clubs, including Hamburg, Düsseldorf, and Leverkusen, and was part of the team that won both the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal last season. Additionally, Tah has earned 32 caps for Germany, meaning he’s seen it all and won’t be fazed by the pressures of playing for Spurs.
Beyond his physical attributes, Tah is also strong on the ball. According to FBref, he ranks in the top 1% of centre-backs across Europe’s top leagues for pass completion, top 6% for total shots, and top 11% for touches in the opposition’s penalty area. His ability to make progressive passes and influence play from the back would offer Spurs another dimension in attack, something they currently lack.
Given his skill set, experience, and the fact he could be available on a free transfer, signing Tah seems like an absolute no-brainer for Spurs. With a market value of around €30m (£25m), securing him for nothing would represent an incredible bargain.
