Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris provided injury updates on Romaine Mundle and Alan Browne ahead of the team’s upcoming match against Millwall.
Mundle has been one of Sunderland’s standout performers this season, scoring four goals in 15 Championship appearances. Since Jack Clarke’s summer transfer to Ipswich Town, Mundle has stepped up, with many supporters viewing the former Tottenham player as a better fit for the team than Clarke was.
Browne, who joined Sunderland on a free transfer from Preston North End in the summer, has also made a strong impact. The midfielder, who made over 400 appearances for Preston, has played 12 times for Sunderland in the Championship this season. However, both Mundle and Browne were forced off with injuries during the recent match against Coventry City. Mundle had been abroad during the international break, which may suggest he was given time off due to injury.
Le Bris confirmed in a press conference on Thursday that both players are facing significant injury setbacks. When asked if the duo would be sidelined for an extended period, Le Bris stated, “Yeah, probably. At least six to eight weeks, probably.” He revealed that Mundle has suffered a hamstring injury, while Browne is dealing with a leg fracture, meaning both are expected to miss the remainder of 2024.
Despite the absence of key players like Mundle and the suspension of Patrick Roberts for the Millwall match, Le Bris is determined not to alter Sunderland’s attacking style. When asked if he would adopt a more defensive approach due to the injury and suspension crisis, he firmly responded, “No.” He added, “The mindset of the team remains the same. The identity of the club is clear—we want to win. We want to play fast and use quick attacks when possible, even with fewer positions. It’s not a problem for us. We want to score.”
Looking ahead, Sunderland expects to have several players returning to fitness by January. In addition to Mundle and Browne, Jenson Seelt, Ian Poveda, Ahmed Abdullahi, and Salis Abdul Samed could all be available for selection in the new year.
