Trevoh Chalobah reunited with his former teammate Marc Guehi when he completed his loan move from Chelsea to Crystal Palace. The two had previously played together in the youth teams of both England and Chelsea, making 10 appearances alongside each other. This season, they have added another six appearances together in Palace’s defense.
However, the Sierra Leone-born defender nearly missed the chance to play with Guehi again, as Newcastle had been close to signing the England international during the summer transfer window. In a recent interview with Glenn Murray for BBC Sport, Chalobah shared what he said to Guehi after Crystal Palace managed to keep him at the club.
When Murray suggested that Chalobah may have been brought in to replace Guehi, the Chelsea loanee responded, “Yeah, I was happy he didn’t go – I told him that! It’s nice to partner him.” The 25-year-old’s inclusion in the starting lineup for Palace coincided with an improvement in the team’s form, despite early struggles in defeats to Liverpool and Nottingham Forest as he sought to regain his rhythm.
In his third start alongside Guehi and Maxence Lacroix, Chalobah helped Palace secure a 1-0 victory over Tottenham, followed by a 2-1 win against Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup. The pair also scored in a 2-2 draw with Wolves at Molineux.
Despite his joy at Guehi staying at Selhurst Park, Chalobah’s reunion with his friend could soon be short-lived. According to the Daily Mirror, Newcastle are expected to make a move for Guehi in the upcoming January transfer window. Eddie Howe remains keen to bring the Ivory Coast defender to Tyneside and believes they can sign him for £30 million, as Guehi has reportedly refused to sign a new contract with Palace.
It will be interesting to see how this situation develops, especially with the growing uncertainty surrounding Crystal Palace’s season. Selling their captain mid-campaign would be a significant move, one that seems unlikely, given the challenges the club is facing this year.
