Paul Merson Warns Arsenal: No More Mistakes as They Face Nottingham Forest in Crucial Clash
Arsenal will be looking to reignite their title challenge as they host Nottingham Forest at the Emirates Stadium this Saturday, with Paul Merson stressing the importance of this match for their Premier League hopes.
The Gunners, who trail league leaders Liverpool by nine points, can afford no more slip-ups if they intend to lift the Premier League trophy this season. With a tough start to the campaign behind them, Merson believes Arsenal’s margin for error is razor-thin.
However, the former Arsenal star is confident that Mikel Arteta’s side will get back on track with a 3-1 victory over Forest. Speaking to Metro, Merson said: “It’s a tricky game for Arsenal because they can’t afford any more mistakes. They need to keep winning, simple as that. Nottingham Forest have actually been better away from home, but their early-season form is beginning to fade after that loss to Newcastle.
“I think Arsenal’s midfield will be too strong for Forest, with the likes of Martin Ødegaard and Thomas Partey in control. Forest will always be dangerous on the counter, but I don’t see Chris Wood causing too many problems for Saliba and Gabriel.
“This is a must-win game for Arsenal. It’s a cup final. They have some favorable fixtures coming up, and they’ll be hopeful of going on a winning run. I back them to win their next six or seven games, starting with this one.
“Besides Liverpool, they’ve already faced all of last season’s top six away from home, and we’re only 11 games in. It’s been a tough start, but now they have a run of more manageable fixtures. If they win the next six or seven, they’ll be right back in the title race with a real chance to win it. But if the gap widens to 12 points, their chances will be gone. At the moment, they’re nine points behind Liverpool, so every game is crucial from here on.”
Ahead of the match, Arteta faces some injury concerns, with Ben White ruled out for months due to a knee injury. Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka are also doubts, and there are concerns over Leandro Trossard following an injury sustained during international duty.
