Newcastle United are preparing to make another attempt to sign Marc Guehi in the upcoming January transfer window, with the Crystal Palace centre-back remaining a key target for the Magpies.
Despite a failed bid in the summer when Paul Mitchell sought to bring the England international to St James’ Park, Newcastle are undeterred and plan to revisit the deal. Eddie Howe, still in need of defensive reinforcements, is particularly focused on bolstering his centre-back options. The injury to Emil Krafth has further highlighted the club’s need for additional cover at the back, with Guehi still at the top of their wish list.
Marc Guehi Remains Newcastle’s Top Target
According to TBR Football insider Graeme Bailey, who spoke to Geordie Boot Boys about Newcastle’s January plans, Guehi is still the preferred choice. “If Newcastle could pick one centre-back to sign, it would be Marc Guehi,” Bailey revealed. “But if a deal can’t be struck quickly, they won’t drag it out and will move on to other targets.”
Bailey emphasized the effort Newcastle has put into scouting Guehi, noting that the 23-year-old fits Eddie Howe’s preferred profile: “There’s a certain type of character Eddie Howe likes, and Marc Guehi is exactly that. Newcastle really like him, and it’s no surprise they’re going to go back in for him. However, they’re also doing due diligence on alternatives.”
Crystal Palace’s Stance on Guehi
While Palace were reluctant to entertain offers in the summer, stringing Newcastle along through the media, the situation could change in January. Guehi, entering the final 18 months of his contract at Selhurst Park, has yet to agree to a new deal. As a result, Palace may be more willing to sell him in the new year rather than risk losing him for less in the future.
Bailey adds, “Crystal Palace have told Guehi they will sell him in 2025 if he doesn’t sign a new contract. He’s not going to agitate for a move, but he’s also not going to extend his deal.”
This could play into Newcastle’s hands, as Palace look to avoid losing their captain for free in 2025. While the Eagles will likely aim for the best possible deal, the timing of a potential transfer may make January a more attractive option. However, as in the summer, Newcastle will only pursue a move for the right price.
Ultimately, despite evaluating other centre-back options, it remains clear that Newcastle’s primary focus is still Marc Guehi—suggesting a “Guehi or nothing” scenario for their January centre-back search.
