“Never going to work” – brutally honest reaction to Leicester City’s ruthless Steve Cooper sacking
Leicester City fans have shared their views following the sacking of Steve Cooper after their 2-1 home defeat to Chelsea.
Cooper, who replaced Enzo Maresca in the summer, was dismissed after just five months in charge. At the time of his departure, Leicester were in 16th place, just one point above the relegation zone.
One of the main reasons for Cooper’s exit has been attributed to a disconnect with the fans, stemming from the difficult transition in playing style. Maresca’s expansive football was replaced by Cooper’s more direct, counterattacking approach, which fans found hard to accept. On X, Foxes supporters voiced their opinions, with @ciarandurham commenting: “It was never going to work, we got it very wrong in the summer, and I’m glad we acted quickly.”
@chris_railway remarked: “Cooper is a nice guy, but it just wasn’t happening on the pitch. Better to act early than wait too long like we did with the 22-23 season.”
Leicester’s early decision to sack Cooper marks a shift in the club’s usual approach of giving managers more time. Some believe the club learned from the delay in parting ways with Brendan Rodgers during the 2022/23 relegation battle.
Foxes fan @LCFC1884VERDICT stated: “He seemed like a good guy, but in the Premier League, we can’t wait for things to improve magically. We’ve been poor in almost every game this season, and every point has had a bit of luck. I just hope the club has a plan.”
@Birdiex94x added: “Wow, it’s done. He seemed like a nice guy, but his tactics and subs were frustrating. Good on the club for acting quickly, unlike with Brendan.”
Another fan, @lcfc_zoone, said: “You feel for Cooper, though. The board put him in a situation he couldn’t handle. He seemed like a lovely person, but it just didn’t work out.”
@ajwatchLCFC even went as far as to claim: “No #lcfc fan would be surprised by the sacking! He was the worst manager we’ve had in 30 years—no tactics or game plan.”
While fans generally wished Cooper well, many felt the club made the right choice. However, some outside the club expressed surprise, including former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson, who commented: “Unbelievable that Leicester sacked Steve Cooper when they’re not even in the bottom 3… what did they expect at the start of the season—free-flowing football and European football?”
Leicester’s next match is against Brentford on Saturday, with uncertainty surrounding the appointment of a new manager before the game. Ex-Manchester United and Real Madrid striker Ruud van Nistelrooy and former Chelsea manager Graham Potter are currently the leading candidates for the role.
