Rob Edwards admitted that his Luton Town team “couldn’t get near” Leeds United in their defeat this evening.
Goals from Sam Byram, Joel Piroe, and substitute Daniel James either side of half-time handed the Hatters their fifth consecutive away loss. They are now winless in their last 10 away league encounters with Leeds (D2 L8).
Edwards described Elland Road as “the toughest place to come in the Championship right now,” adding, “It certainly felt that way tonight.”
He called Leeds a “high-quality opponent” and stated that his team “couldn’t get near them.” Edwards was particularly frustrated with the timing of Leeds’ second goal, which came just before the break when Piroe capitalized on a lapse in concentration from a corner. Edwards expressed deep frustration with the defending during that set piece.
The defeat leaves Luton in 16th place, just three points above the relegation zone. After being relegated from the Premier League last season, Luton had climbed out of the bottom three with a win over Hull City last weekend but missed two good chances in the first half to get on the scoreboard.
For Leeds, the victory marked their sixth in eight matches, sending them back to the top of the table on goal difference over Sheffield United. It was a well-earned win.
Leeds manager Daniel Farke praised his team’s consistency in performance and results but acknowledged there were areas to improve. “Our efficiency could be better,” he said. “Although we dominated, we allowed them a few chances. There were moments where Illan [Meslier] had to step up, and Pascal Struijk cleared one off the line. They sat deep and remained defensive even after falling behind. We can be more mature and pragmatic at times to avoid conceding chances, but I don’t want to be overly critical.”
