Newcastle United dropped more points in the Premier League this afternoon, conceding a late equalizer to Crystal Palace in a 1-1 draw.
Eddie Howe’s side was forced to play without Alexander Isak for most of the match, as the striker was substituted due to injury just 20 minutes in. Left-back Lewis Hall struggled throughout, losing possession an alarming 22 times, failing to make any key passes, and being dribbled past twice in what was a poor performance.
One of the most disappointing players for Newcastle was Joelinton, who was deployed on the left side of a three-man attack but failed to make any significant impact. Despite playing the full 90 minutes, the Brazilian registered no goals or assists and struggled to contribute offensively. He lost possession 20 times, won only five of his 15 duels, and committed two fouls. Defensively, he was also ineffective, failing to provide any support during Palace’s late equalizer. Joelinton attempted five dribbles, but none were successful, and he did not register a shot.
Journalist Dominic Scurr gave Joelinton a match rating of 6/10, commenting that he was “in and out of the match” and “couldn’t deal with the late ball into the box” for Palace’s goal. This performance suggests that Howe should consider dropping Joelinton to the bench for Newcastle’s next match against Liverpool, especially if he hopes to secure a positive result against the Premier League leaders.
Howe has limited options for replacing Joelinton, though. Harvey Barnes could potentially start on the left wing, depending on who Howe chooses to play as the center-forward. Regardless, the 1-1 draw against Palace felt like a missed opportunity for the Magpies. A Marc Guehi own goal had looked set to give them all three points, but a last-minute goal from Daniel Munoz, assisted by Guehi, saw the game end in a draw.
As for Newcastle’s best performers, Sandro Tonali impressed in midfield, winning 100% of his ground duels and making three successful tackles. He also completed 100% of his dribbles and took 57 touches. At the back, Dan Burn and Fabian Schar formed a solid center-back partnership, winning four of their six ground duels, though they will be disappointed to have conceded a late equalizer.
