Sandro Tonali has made his highly anticipated return to football following a 10-month suspension. In a recent interview with Vivo Azzurro TV, the Newcastle United and Italy midfielder opened up about his challenging journey and his excitement to be back on the pitch.
Reflecting on his comeback match for Italy against France, Tonali shared a sense of relief:
“My return against France felt like a bit of a liberation. The first matches with Newcastle were emotional, but this one was purely about football. By the third match, the emotions had settled, and everything came naturally.”
The 24-year-old didn’t shy away from discussing the hardships he endured during his suspension:
“Last year was tough, but also very productive. I’ll always carry the memory of that year away from the field because it’s important not to forget it. Training without a match as the end goal left a sense of emptiness. The first year away from home, staying physically fit without playing official games, was challenging. But I approached it with seriousness.”
Tonali also reflected on his early days in football and his first setback:
“I played with my brother and his friends, who were a few years older than me. Despite the age gap, I was just as good. I was a child dreaming of becoming a footballer, even writing to Santa Lucia asking to play for Milan. Somehow, someone must have listened.”
“The key was that I didn’t treat it as a test, but as fun and training. I made a clean break and took another path. Many young people lose hope after a setback, but it’s just one of the many obstacles football throws at you.”
He also spoke about his relationship with Gennaro Gattuso:
“My bond with Rino started after I joined Milan, when I asked him for his shirt number, which I admired. I felt I needed his permission and advice, and that led to a lasting relationship. He’s a great person, different off the field than how he seemed on it. On the pitch, he appeared tough, but in reality, he’s always ready to help everyone. That’s why I admire him, both on and off the field.”
Finally, Tonali discussed his experience playing for the national team under manager Luciano Spalletti:
“My relationship with Mr. Spalletti has been very important. He’s always been supportive. We didn’t talk much, but we had the right conversations, especially before and after the European Championship. He understood that after a year off, I wouldn’t be in peak form. We’re focusing on simplicity. Everyone is playing to their strengths, helping each other, and there are no individual efforts. This approach has made a difference so far.
