‘We know’ – Ruud van Nistelrooy makes St James’ Park claim Newcastle United supporters will love
Ruud van Nistelrooy acknowledged that his Leicester City players were outclassed by a dominant Newcastle United. The former Manchester United striker experienced his first defeat as the Foxes’ manager at a stadium where he had enjoyed considerable success as a player.
Newcastle took the lead in the 30th minute through Jacob Murphy, who finished a short corner involving Lewis Hall, Sandro Tonali, and Anthony Gordon. The Magpies then made it 3-0 just five minutes into the second half with quick goals from Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak. Murphy scored his second of the game in the 60th minute, completing the 4-0 scoreline.
Reflecting on the defeat, van Nistelrooy said, “Newcastle’s dominance was clear. The team gave their best, but the game was decided by small details. The first goal came from a set-piece, and so did the second one, right after halftime. These are the kinds of details that matter. Once you’re 2-0 down away at Newcastle, you need to handle these situations to have any chance of getting a result. Otherwise, it’s a tough afternoon.”
When asked about the atmosphere at St James’ Park, van Nistelrooy added, “We know the intensity of St James’ Park. It can really fire up, and once it does, the atmosphere is electric. Newcastle’s players have strong profiles, with high pressing intensity and dangerous counter-attacks. We were poor defensively, and in possession, we struggled. We didn’t maintain enough structure to keep the ball, and some of our mistakes led to counter-attacks. Set-pieces also played a big role in the outcome today.”
