Ex-PGMOL Chief”- Arsenal should have been punished after Arsenal v Everton incident
Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey should have been penalized for simulation against Everton, according to former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett.
In the 0-0 draw at the Emirates on December 14, the Gunners appealed for a penalty late in the game, but the referee immediately dismissed the claims after a solid challenge by Vitalii Mykolenko.
Hackett acknowledged that Partey was attempting to deceive the officials but was unsuccessful in doing so.
Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, Hackett praised the referee’s decision but noted a missed opportunity for further authority. “The referee got this spot on – it was not a penalty,” he said. “The Arsenal player went down trying to deceive the referee. There was an opportunity for the referee to reinforce his decision by issuing a yellow card to Partey for simulation.”
Mykolenko was outstanding against players like Bukayo Saka, who was largely neutralized thanks to the Ukrainian’s defensive work. Even when outnumbered, Mykolenko made key interventions, such as winning the ball from Partey in the dying moments of the game.
Everton manager Sean Dyche will be pleased with the point, as the Toffees are now three points clear of the relegation zone, with Ipswich still having a game in hand against Liverpool. Former top referee Mike Dean also agreed with Hackett’s assessment, confirming that the penalty appeal was never valid. Everton can now celebrate a well-earned clean sheet.
