Leicester City faced Newcastle United in a Premier League clash on Saturday, December 14th, with the Foxes still battling to avoid a quick relegation back to the Championship. However, under the guidance of manager Ruud van Nistelrooy, Leicester had shown some improvement, remaining unbeaten with a win over West Ham United and a draw against Brighton & Hove Albion.
Newcastle, however, had been struggling, conceding seven goals in their previous two matches. With Leicester’s defense among the most porous in the league this season, a high-scoring game seemed likely.
Leicester fans were displeased with Van Nistelrooy’s team selection for the Newcastle match. Despite injuries and suspensions in midfield, the inclusion of Kasey McAteer instead of Facundo Buonanotte was a surprising decision.
Leicester found themselves 1-0 down in the 30th minute thanks to a goal from Newcastle winger Jacob Murphy. The situation worsened in the second half when goalkeeper Mads Hermansen was absent. Van Nistelrooy later revealed that Hermansen had sustained a groin injury and could not continue. He expressed hope that the injury wasn’t too serious but noted that Hermansen was certain he couldn’t carry on.
Leicester went on to concede three more goals, losing 4-0 to Newcastle. With Hermansen potentially out for a while, Van Nistelrooy may need to explore the free-agent market for a replacement goalkeeper. One viable option is 37-year-old Keylor Navas, who has been without a club since leaving Paris Saint-Germain over the summer and could join immediately.
Alternatively, Leicester could stick with backup goalkeeper Danny Ward, though fans are likely hoping for a new signing. Ward, who replaced Hermansen on Saturday, did not impress, and his performance could be a cause for concern as Leicester faces a crucial relegation battle against Wolves next week.
