Referee Michael Oliver admits he made ‘mistake’ before Crystal Palace goal against Brighton”- Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler says referee Michael Oliver told him he made a ‘mistake’ that aided Crystal Palace’s first goal.
Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler has revealed that referee Michael Oliver admitted to making a ‘mistake’ that led to Crystal Palace’s first goal during their 3-1 defeat at the Amex Stadium in the M23 derby.
The loss extended Brighton’s winless run to four games as Palace claimed all three points. Trevoh Chalobah opened the scoring with a first-half goal, followed by a brace from Ismaila Sarr, putting Palace 3-0 ahead. Marc Guehi’s own goal provided a late consolation for Brighton.
Hurzeler was particularly upset by the sequence leading to Chalobah’s opener. As Palace launched a counter-attack, referee Oliver inadvertently got in the way of Brighton’s Moisés Caicedo, which ultimately led to a corner for the visitors. A second corner followed, from which Chalobah struck the ball into the roof of the net to give Palace the lead.
Hurzeler voiced his frustration after the match, saying, “When the referee admits after the game that it was his mistake, I don’t understand why he didn’t stop the game.”
While Hurzeler had reason to complain about the build-up to Chalobah’s goal, there were fewer grounds for grievance over Palace’s second and third goals. Brighton’s Tariq Lamptey misjudged a high ball, allowing Tyrick Mitchell to cross for Sarr to head home. Then, Lewis Dunk lost a physical battle to Eddie Nketiah, allowing Sarr to race past the Brighton captain and calmly score Palace’s third.
After Guehi’s own goal, Nketiah had a golden opportunity to score his first Premier League goal for Palace, but his chipped attempt over goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen went wide.
Brighton had several chances but were thwarted by some excellent saves from Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson, including a fingertip save to deny Julio Enciso’s powerful strike.
The defeat to Palace was Hurzeler’s first home loss as Brighton manager, and also marked Palace’s first league victory over Brighton in six matches. Additionally, Brighton’s loss was their 60th in their last 180 Premier League games, with 60 wins and 60 draws completing the record.
Hurzeler and his team will aim to halt their winless run when they face West Ham United away on December 21.
