Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis is reportedly in talks to invest in another football club as he looks to expand his sports empire.
Marinakis has been linked with a potential takeover of Brazilian club Vasco da Gama in recent weeks. However, the 57-year-old is facing stiff competition for the club, with the possibility that he could be outbid, despite Vasco fans showing support for his potential acquisition.
As a result, Marinakis is said to be focusing his attention on another Brazilian club, São Paulo. According to Terra, São Paulo’s president, Julio Cesares, confirmed that early-stage negotiations are underway regarding investment in the club.
“We’re in discussions. It’s still in the early stages, and I’m taking it slowly, but we’re making good progress toward bringing in a businessman with ties to the sports sector, not just the financial one,” Cesares said.
However, Cesares clarified that there are no plans for a full sale of the club to Marinakis in the near future. Instead, São Paulo is looking for him to participate in a “revenue share,” where the investor would contribute funds and engage in the club’s operations without taking full ownership.
Cesares also indicated that Marinakis would have priority should the club ever consider a complete sale.
“If Marinakis arrives with that expectation, we will consider it. But of course, if the club ever discusses a SAF (Sociedade Anônima do Futebol), he would have the preference to be the first one we listen to,” Cesares explained.
“São Paulo has a potential leverage that could be discussed in the future, if the club decides to. I’m not going to discuss the financial details, but São Paulo will soon be more competitive and begin to thrive.”
