The former Celtic star insists that critics of the club fail to grasp how challenging it is to maintain consistent success while ensuring silverware continues to accumulate at Parkhead.
The reigning champions have now amassed 119 trophies, 42 of which have come in the 21st century, making them the most successful team globally.
Reflecting on the controversy surrounding the VAR penalty decision during Brendan Rodgers’ team’s Premier Sports League Cup Final win over Philippe Clement’s Rangers, Sutton believes the intense reaction only highlights Rangers’ “losers mentality.”
The former England striker stated, “The reaction to Sunday’s match has been hysterical, with some even calling for the game to be replayed. I’d be up for it—maybe I should dig out my boots and we can revisit the 2003 Celtic v Rangers League Cup Final.
Remember when John Hartson’s goal was ruled offside despite him being about 25 yards onside, and Rangers went on to win the cup? Let’s do that again. If we’re replaying finals for refereeing mistakes, we might as well revisit every final in history. That’s how ridiculous the idea is.”
“Rangers won’t find much comfort in Willie Collum admitting the VAR officials made an error with the penalty decision. But they can’t use this incident as a distraction from yet another defeat to Celtic—and yet another trophy slipping away from them. It might have been a penalty, but it could have been missed, and Celtic could have come back anyway. It’s all hypothetical. In 2003, we had chances after the offside call but didn’t take them. That’s football. The way Rangers have reacted shows just how much expectations have fallen at Ibrox, and it reflects a losers mentality still present at the club.”
Sutton continued, “There’s this narrative that Rangers were robbed at Hampden and that they played well. But hang on, didn’t they concede three goals? And against a Celtic team that wasn’t even firing on all cylinders? Are we giving moral victories because Rangers didn’t get thrashed? This isn’t the Rangers I used to face.
They’re using the controversial decision as an excuse when, in reality, they finished second best to Celtic again. Yes, they showed spirit coming back from 2-1 and 3-2 down, but they still fell short and ended up with nothing. There are still major concerns surrounding them.”
“Rangers have shown improvement under Philippe Clement in recent weeks, with a strong performance against Spurs and some other solid displays. But it’s still a very small sample size. Should we just ignore the previous four months? Clement has bought some time, but I still think he’s on thin ice. If he fails to beat Celtic at Ibrox on New Year’s Day, I can’t see him surviving.”
Sutton added, “Clement was complaining about the Hampden decision, but that shouldn’t overshadow the issues still plaguing Rangers. It also shouldn’t take away from Celtic’s achievement. Unlike their rivals, Celtic know how to win. I’ve seen some criticism of recent performances, but I think that’s harsh. They clearly don’t understand how tough it is to win week in and week out. I do—and it’s incredibly difficult.”
“Celtic are still grinding out results despite the packed schedule. They’ll need to keep doing so, as the fixtures aren’t getting any easier. As for Rangers, the pressure is on them too. But Celtic aren’t struggling. They haven’t lost domestically since March, and the only time they’ve scored fewer than two goals in a match in Scotland was when they won in the freezing monsoon at Pittodrie a few weeks ago. That’s not struggling.”
Celtic’s pursuit of more points continues tomorrow at Tannadice as they face Dundee United in a crucial showdown.
