“Explosive Reactions from Mario Lemina and Nelson Semedo After Matheus Cunha Steals the Captain’s Armband vs Leicester
Wolves secured a 3-0 victory over Leicester City on Sunday in Vitor Pereira’s debut match as manager, marking the perfect start for the new boss.

Despite having only a few days to work with his new squad, Pereira guided Wolves to a commanding win at the King Power Stadium. The team was clinical in the final third, taking full advantage of Leicester’s defensive errors.
Most notably, Wolves displayed a vastly improved defensive performance compared to previous weeks. They were solid, compact, and composed, with no real moments of danger. The organization and control were evident, something that had been lacking under O’Neil.
In another significant change, Matheus Cunha captained the team for the first time. There had been some speculation surrounding the captaincy following O’Neil’s decision to strip Mario Lemina of the armband after an emotional reaction to Wolves’ loss to West Ham. Nelson Semedo had temporarily taken over the role, but Pereira suggested in his first press conference that the captaincy could still be up for discussion.
On Sunday, Semedo wore the captain’s armband until the 89th minute, at which point Cunha took over. After the game, Cunha expressed his pride on Instagram, saying, “First time captain of this team. It’s a pleasure to learn from you @nelsonsemedo50 @lemsm13.”
Both Semedo and Lemina responded to Cunha’s post, with Semedo commenting “very prepared man” and Lemina calling him a “baller.”
While Gonçalo Guedes was arguably Wolves’ best player against Leicester, Cunha also delivered an impressive performance. After struggling in O’Neil’s final matches, the Brazilian showed his quality under Pereira’s leadership. It was a memorable moment for Cunha, especially considering some fans had suggested he should have replaced Max Kilman as captain earlier in the summer.
It remains to be seen what Pereira decides regarding the captaincy moving forward. Semedo seems like a sensible choice to continue wearing the armband, as he remains calm and composed—traits that could benefit Wolves for the rest of the season. Changing the captaincy again doesn’t seem necessary, given Semedo’s steady leadership.
