“Is this a fair result”- Pep Guardiola reaction when asked after Man City draw with Everton
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola appeared frustrated and puzzled as his team drew 1-1 with Everton at home on Boxing Day.
City have now won just one of their last 13 games across all competitions, missing a key opportunity to get back to winning ways after Erling Haaland’s second-half penalty was saved.
Guardiola’s reaction was notably grim, as City lost more ground not only in the title race (which now seems out of reach) but also in the crucial fight for a top-four finish.
Manuel Akanji’s thoughts after the Everton draw: Manuel Akanji was asked by Amazon Prime in the UK if a draw was a fair result. He responded, “I don’t think so, no. I think we did much more throughout the game. We created lots of chances, but unfortunately, we only scored one goal and conceded one out of basically nothing. That’s just how football goes.”
Akanji expressed disappointment over City’s inability to convert their chances and was shocked that they nearly lost in stoppage time after pushing everyone forward.
“This was a game where we could have scored two, three, or even four goals, but the ball just wouldn’t go in,” Akanji said. “Honestly, it can’t happen that we nearly lose the game in the last minute. We were attacking, lost the ball, and it became a six-on-two situation in front of our goal. Thankfully, I could block the shot. But we must believe until the final moment that we can win, though it wasn’t possible today.”
Asked if City could still get back into the title race, Akanji said, “The season isn’t over, but right now, that [being in the title race] isn’t our focus. We need to take it game by game, and the next one is against Leicester, which won’t be easy given our current form. We need to fully focus, recover, and give our best in that match.”
Akanji also mentioned that City could take confidence from their performance into the Leicester game on Sunday. “We did a lot of things well. We defended well, we attacked well, but we just couldn’t finish our chances. If we had, I think we would have scored three or four goals,” he added.
