‘If we can’ – Pep Guardiola drops major transfer hint amid Bruno Guimaraes speculation
Pep Guardiola has acknowledged that Manchester City need to make additions in the January transfer window.
The team has faced a disappointing run of results to end 2024, with a 1-1 draw against Everton on Boxing Day extending their poor form. As a result, they are trailing their title rivals by a significant margin as they approach the new year. A combination of underperforming key players and injuries, particularly to Ballon d’Or winner Rodri, has played a major role in City’s recent struggles.
Rodri’s injury, in particular, has been a severe setback for Guardiola. With the midfielder set to miss a large portion of the season, City could turn to the transfer market to fill the gap. Bruno Guimaraes, who has impressed at Newcastle United, has been frequently linked with a move to the Etihad.
Guimaraes, who was named Newcastle’s captain in the summer, has become a key figure in the squad after nearly three years at the club. Although City did not activate his release clause in the summer, rumors about a potential move to Manchester persist. Guardiola’s recent comments indicate that strengthening the midfield will be a priority for City in January.
Ahead of the match with Everton, Guardiola was asked about the possibility of signings by Fabrizio Romano on X. He responded, “If we can, we have to add players in January… definitely! We’ve struggled, especially in defense and midfield. I think even the players have been asking… are we going to bring in some players? Please!”
