Eddie Howe sends ominous Alexander Isak warning to Newcastle’s Prem rivals
Eddie Howe is demanding even more from in-form Newcastle striker Alexander Isak.
The 25-year-old Swedish international increased his goal tally for the season to 12 with a brace in Newcastle’s 3-0 Boxing Day victory over Aston Villa at St James’ Park. Ten of those goals have come in his last 10 Premier League appearances, following a tough start to the campaign.
Isak, who netted 25 goals last season, has continued to justify the £63million the club spent to sign him from Real Sociedad in the summer of 2022. However, despite his impressive form, head coach Howe is eager to see even more from his prized signing.
When asked about Isak’s place among the best in world football, Howe replied: “My focus with Alex is always on evaluating his game day in and day out. I’m constantly looking for ways to push him further. My job isn’t just to appreciate his current form; it’s to find areas where he can improve and keep pushing him. He has all the qualities needed, but football is constantly evolving, and he must evolve with it.
“There’s still so much more he can give. Our role is to help him achieve that.
“Others can debate his place in the global rankings, but for me, his game is in a good place right now. Ultimately, the key for Alex is to stay focused, ignore the praise, and continue contributing to the team, rather than being self-centered. It’s all about Newcastle, and he’s playing his part.”
Isak’s return to top form has been key to Newcastle’s recent success. They head to Manchester United on Monday night seeking a fifth consecutive win in all competitions. Isak has scored in each of the last five league games, taking on the role of the Magpies’ main striker— a role previously held by legends like Jackie Milburn, Malcolm Macdonald, and Alan Shearer.
On Isak’s character, Howe said: “He’s calm and composed— exactly what you see on the pitch. He doesn’t get too emotional, which is an excellent trait for a striker. That coolness in front of goal is part of his personality. It’s like he has an extra half-second to think when others don’t.
“What stands out about Alex is his desire to improve. He listens to the feedback and responds well. He’s not closed off to suggestions. He knows he hasn’t reached his peak yet and continues to strive to add to his game. The challenge for him is to keep scoring consistently, like he’s doing now.”
