PGMOL general manager Hackett delivered controversial verdict as Philippe Clement now faces Rangers sack after shock incident v Motherwell
Rangers were once again caught in a VAR controversy during their 2-2 draw with Motherwell at Fir Park on Sunday afternoon.
A first-half goal from Apostolos Stamatelopoulos stood despite the ball seemingly striking his arm before he slotted it past Jack Butland. Robin Propper’s attempted clearance was poor, but the ball clearly made contact with Stamatelopoulos’ arm.
Keith Hackett, a former Premier League and FIFA referee, believes the goal should have been disallowed. He told Ibrox News, “This is handball. The forward’s arm is not in a natural position, and his body movement and contact with the ball should have resulted in the goal being ruled out.”
Pressure on Clement Following Latest VAR Controversy
Philippe Clement is under growing pressure at Ibrox, especially as Celtic extends their lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership. Stamatelopoulos’ goal was one of two Rangers conceded during the 2-2 draw at Fir Park. Hackett suggests that incorrect VAR decisions can contribute to managers, like Clement, losing their jobs.
He added, “When the Scottish FA introduced VAR, they hoped it would improve decision-making in the Premiership. These big decisions, especially regarding handball, are subjective. The ball hitting the forward during a clearance is a clear handling offence in my view.”
“Referees must focus on getting these major decisions right. The consequences of errors at the elite level are immense—they can lead to managerial changes, relegation, or missing out on UEFA qualification. It’s crucial for Head of Referees Willie Collum to review these incidents and provide the right operational guidance.”
In other Rangers news, Clement has faced criticism for a request he made during a press conference.
