“It’s not good enough”- Kris Boyd’s epic meltdown as Celtic go 14 points clear of Rangers, with incredible Philippe Clement rant
It’s been a festive time for Celtic, but a period of misery for Rangers supporters.
Celtic’s dominant 4-0 win over St Johnstone on Sunday wasn’t broadcast on Sky Sports, but Rangers’ disappointing draw at Motherwell was, and it made for compelling viewing. Kris Boyd was at Fir Park to witness the Rangers disaster unfold, which saw them go 2-0 down by halftime.
As Nicolas Kuhn, Kyogo Furuhashi with a brace, and Daizen Maeda all contributed to another Celtic victory, Rangers manager Philippe Clement could be seen pacing the touchline, visibly unsettled. This comes just days before Celtic’s eagerly anticipated clash with Rangers at Ibrox, where the champions could extend their lead to 17 points.
Kris Boyd Reacts to Celtic’s 14-Point Lead Over Rangers
Regardless of what people think of Boyd, he’s never one to shy away from speaking his mind, especially when Rangers are struggling. And that was certainly the case after the Motherwell draw, where the former Scotland striker’s frustration was evident.
Boyd didn’t mince words when discussing Rangers’ performance, saying, “It’s not good enough. As I said at half-time, there will be people saying ‘at least they showed some fight in the second half’. But for a Rangers team to come here and perform like they did in that first half—it’s not the first time it’s happened. I 100% agree with the Rangers fans booing their own players post-match. I’ve never understood the idea of players going over to applaud away fans. For cup finals or after winning things, sure, but after a league game? Just get yourself down the tunnel and dust yourself off.”
Boyd continued, “You were 12 points behind Celtic coming into this game, and now you’re 14 points behind. You’ve got a Glasgow derby on Thursday. Right now, if you’re a betting man, there’s only one way this is going. Rangers have so many issues on the field – the first half was a disaster, again!”
Boyd Predicts Philippe Clement Will Lose His Job
Celtic fans might secretly hope that Clement stays in charge at Rangers, as it would add to the spectacle of Thursday’s derby. Brendan Rodgers has seen off many Ibrox managers, and Boyd believes Clement is the next to go.
Boyd launched into an impassioned rant, explaining why Clement’s tenure at Rangers is likely coming to an end. “I have an issue with sports science,” he said. “They’re running too many football clubs. Looking back at when we were players, things have improved in terms of recovery and facilities, but when I hear talk about players coming on ‘fresh’—Cerny and Igamane for 45 minutes—that does absolutely nothing for you. They came on because Rangers needed a result.”
He added, “Sports science won’t get sacked; the manager will. Fans will ask why he’s relying on them, and they’ll look to the new leadership team for answers. It’s not enough. As a manager, you’ll lose your job over decisions like this. These guys only care about themselves. If a new manager comes in, they’ll change their approach to sports science to suit that new manager. It’s running Rangers right now, and that’s Clement’s problem. He’s going to lose his job because of it.”
