Leicester City is bracing for a busy January transfer window, with numerous players expected to both arrive and depart King Power Stadium.
Although it’s only the second day of January, several rumors have already sparked excitement among Leicester fans, especially with manager Ruud van Nistelrooy eyeing defensive reinforcements. Leicester has been linked with Ben Godfrey, the Atalanta center-back, who has been given permission to leave, alongside other potential signings.
Van Nistelrooy is also looking to offload some of his fringe players, with midfielder Hamza Choudhury attracting interest from Sheffield United.
While Choudhury is one of several players reportedly heading for the exit, Leicester supporters are hoping that one player’s loan could be canceled.
Van Nistelrooy has confirmed that Odsonne Edouard, a striker on loan from Crystal Palace, will remain at Leicester despite a difficult spell. Edouard was one of two Premier League loans allowed in the summer but has struggled to make an impact, failing to score in eight appearances and playing just 229 minutes in the Premier League.
Reports had suggested that he could return to Crystal Palace this month to make room for another loan, but van Nistelrooy insists Edouard, along with fellow loanee Facundo Buonanotte, will stay at the club.
In a recent press conference, the Dutchman stated, “Odsonne is part of our squad. He’s one of the two Premier League loans we have. We expect him and Facundo Buonanotte to be at the club.”
A major reason for Edouard’s limited appearances is Jamie Vardy’s continued excellence. Despite nearing 38, Vardy remains a key player for Leicester, having scored six Premier League goals this season. His performances have earned him praise as a “freak athlete,” and his contract is set to expire in 2025.
With this in mind, van Nistelrooy will need to plan for Vardy’s eventual successor. One option could be Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel, a 19-year-old forward who can play both as a winger and a central striker. Tel was linked with Leicester earlier this season and could be a valuable loan addition for the remainder of the campaign.
