Celtic’s 3-0 loss to Rangers on Thursday marked the first major setback for Brendan Rodgers’ team this season. It gave Rangers fans something to celebrate, considering the dominance Celtic has had over them for more than ten years, including winning the League Cup at Hampden last month.
However, that joy was short-lived as Rangers only managed a 3-3 draw against Hibernian in Sunday’s early kick-off. This result quickly brought Philippe Clement back to reality.
While Celtic didn’t need any extra motivation, it certainly gave Parkhead a boost. The Bhoys responded with a dominant 3-0 victory over St Mirren, extending their lead to 13 points at the top of the table.
Chris Sutton, who was at Easter Road to watch Rangers squander a 2-0 lead, couldn’t resist mocking them after the game.
He had a good laugh at Rangers’ expense, pointing out that while they might beat Celtic, they need to back it up with consistent results. Sutton humorously posted on social media: “What a game 3-3.
Hibs showed great character to come back and equalize, with Rocky scoring the final goal. Martin Boyle was unplayable, and Hamza Igmane’s hat-trick for Rangers was impressive. It’s okay beating Celtic, but Rangers needed to follow it up. Off for a lie down.”
As for Celtic, their 3-0 win over St Mirren came with some tactical changes from Rodgers. He made big decisions, including dropping Liam Scales and Reo Hatate, starting Luke McCowan in midfield, and reintroducing Auston Trusty into the squad.
The moves paid off, and Rodgers expressed his satisfaction with the 13-point lead after the match. Speaking to BBC Radio Scotland, he said, “It’s just another milestone.
We’re at the halfway point after a great pre-season, a fantastic European campaign, and winning the first cup of the season. To reach the halfway point in such a strong position and extend our lead is obviously very pleasing.”
