“Patrick Roberts Sends Shock Transfer Message to Sunderland as January Window Approaches
Patrick Roberts believes Sunderland don’t need major changes during this month’s transfer window and is pleased that speculation surrounding his own future has died down.
Head coach Regis Le Bris has confirmed that Sunderland are looking to make two or three signings by the end of the month, with Roma’s Enzo Le Fee reportedly targeted as a potential midfield addition.
While some of the club’s fringe players, such as Abdoullah Ba and Nazariy Rusyn, could be moved on, Sunderland’s recruitment team is determined to retain the club’s core players. Any significant signings are likely to be postponed until the summer, when the Black Cats aim to be preparing for a Premier League return.
With Sunderland sitting just three points off the Championship’s top spot, stability is a key focus this month, and that suits Roberts, who has been a key figure in the first half of the season.
“I think we’re in a good place,” said Roberts, who played a part in Sunderland’s 1-0 win over Portsmouth on Sunday. “We’ve got a lot of young players, and everyone’s enjoying themselves. There might be a few players who leave, but that’s football. I’ve been in that position before, on loan or when I wasn’t involved.
“That’s just part of the game, but new players bring fresh ideas, different styles, and personalities. We’ll see where it takes us.”
Roberts’ future has been the subject of much speculation in past transfer windows, with Premier League clubs often linked to him. However, in the last 12 months, the transfer rumors have quieted significantly.
The winger, contracted at Sunderland until 2026, with an option for an additional year, is happy to be settled after years of moving between clubs on loan. “Football’s been around a long time. Transfers always happen, but I just focus on my football. I’m enjoying it, feeling good, and life is good,” said Roberts.
The 27-year-old is thriving under head coach Regis Le Bris, who encourages a high-pressing, attacking style of play that suits Roberts’ strengths. The team’s quick and energetic approach, with players like Jobe Bellingham, Chris Rigg, and Eliezer Mayenda sharing his positive mindset, has been a big part of their success.
“It’s a very energetic, quick team,” Roberts said. “You can feel that energy from the crowd. Every game is tough to face as an opposition player. We bring intensity, sharp pace, and a high-pressing tempo. I enjoy it.
“I’ve always liked playing on the front foot, and it helps me. It sharpens my reactions, especially when playing alongside others. If we finish our chances more consistently, we’ll see off games like we did at the start of the year. You can see we’re capable of doing that.”
