Glasgow Rangers have yet to make their first signing of the month, despite the January transfer window officially opening last week.
The team appears to be in need of reinforcements after a challenging first half of the season, where they found themselves 13 points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership. Philippe Clement’s side also fell short in the League Cup, losing to their Glasgow rivals in a penalty shootout during the final. At the start of last year’s January transfer window, the Belgian coach strengthened his squad by signing Mohamed Diomande, Oscar Cortes, and Fabio Silva on loan. This year, a central defender is a priority after injuries to Neraysho Kasanwirjo, John Souttar, and Leon Balogun have left the team short in that area. Rangers are now looking to bring in a new player to enhance the manager’s defensive options, and a Premier League veteran is reportedly on their radar.
Rangers Target Jonny Evans
According to the Daily Record, the Rangers board has proposed the signing of Jonny Evans from Manchester United this month. The report indicates that bringing in a central defender is an urgent priority for Rangers due to their ongoing injury issues in that position. The board has put forward several potential candidates, including Evans, who is seen as a possible addition before the window closes.
However, Clement is reportedly cautious about pursuing a move for the 37-year-old, given his age, and would prefer to sign a younger defender if possible. Another name mentioned as a potential signing is former Rangers center-back Nikola Katić, who left Ibrox in the summer of 2022. It is unclear whether Clement is interested in a deal for Katić or would prefer Evans at this time.
The Daily Record also does not clarify whether Evans would be willing to move to Glasgow, especially considering he has played six times for Manchester United in the Premier League this season. However, if Clement decides to follow the board’s recommendation and brings in the experienced defender, Evans could be a great fit for Rangers, potentially providing valuable support for Dujon Sterling.
Dujon Sterling’s Recent Form
Since joining Rangers permanently from Chelsea in the summer of 2023, Dujon Sterling has played in multiple positions across the pitch. His versatility has made him a useful option for Clement, as he has filled roles as a right-back, midfielder, and central defender. Despite his adaptability, Sterling has struggled to secure a consistent starting spot.
Recently, Sterling has been used as a central defender, starting the last five matches in that position and helping the team secure two clean sheets, including one in the 3-0 Old Firm victory over Celtic at Ibrox. In that match, he made nine clearances and won 67% of his duels. With his recent promising performances, he may have found his long-term role as a central defender, making the addition of a more experienced partner like Evans a good move.
Why Rangers Should Consider Signing Jonny Evans
Though Evans turned 37 this month, Clement’s hesitance to pursue him is understandable, especially with players like Balogun and Robin Propper already in the squad. However, signing Evans on a short-term deal could be a wise move for the club, allowing them to address immediate defensive concerns while buying time to recruit a long-term option in the summer when Nils Koppen will have a clearer window for recruitment.
