Wolverhampton Wanderers secured a 2-1 victory over Bristol City in the third round of the FA Cup, progressing to the next stage. Goals from Rayan Ait-Nouri and Rodrigo Gomes gave Wolves a 2-0 lead, while Scott Twine pulled one back for Bristol just before half-time.
Although Wolves had 49% possession, slightly less than Bristol’s 51%, they created five “big chances,” while the Robins failed to generate any from their six shots.
One standout performance came from debutant Emmanuel Agbadou, who impressed after joining from Reims for approximately £16.6m. The 27-year-old central defender made an immediate impact, playing the full match and showcasing his leadership and duel-winning abilities. He won four of his five ground duels, one of his three aerial duels, and made two interceptions, one tackle, and four clearances.
However, not all of Wolves’ performances were positive. Hwang Hee-chan, who has been under scrutiny recently, once again struggled. The 28-year-old forward has had an inconsistent run at Wolves and, despite 111 appearances and 24 goals for the club, has only scored two goals in 672 minutes this season. His performance against Bristol was lackluster, with just 32 touches—fewer than goalkeeper Sam Johnstone—and no key passes. He missed his only “big chance” and failed to get either of his shots on target.
Though Hwang battled by winning three of his five ground duels and making a tackle, his lack of creativity and impact on the game raises questions about his future at the club. With other attackers like Matheus Cunha and Jorgen Strand Larsen in better form, Hwang’s future looks uncertain, and his performance may hasten his potential departure, especially with West Ham United reportedly interested in him during the January transfer window. A sale could free up resources for manager Vitor Pereira to make his own moves in the market.
