“He was a dead man walking, wasn’t he, but I thought that the treatment towards him at the end just didn’t quite feel right”- Sutton hits out at West Ham after what they did to ‘dead man’ Lopetegui

Chris Sutton has criticized West Ham United for how they treated Julen Lopetegui before his dismissal. While acknowledging that Lopetegui was likely aware his time at the club was running out, Sutton expressed disappointment with how the situation was handled, particularly the timing of his departure.

Lopetegui had overseen a training session on Wednesday, January 8, only to be let go later that day, which Sutton found unsettling.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5’s 606 Football Phone In on January 11, Sutton commented, “He was a dead man walking, but the way he was treated at the end didn’t feel right.”

After a poor run of form left West Ham in 14th place in the Premier League, with just six points, the club decided to part ways with Lopetegui, who had been appointed to replace David Moyes with hopes of lifting the team’s fortunes. Instead, they are now battling relegation.

David Sullivan and the club’s hierarchy have turned to Graham Potter to help guide the team to safety for the remainder of the season. However, Potter’s tenure began poorly, as West Ham squandered a 1-0 lead and lost 2-1 to Aston Villa in the FA Cup on January 10. Despite Lucas Paquetá putting them ahead early, goals from Amadou Onana and Morgan Rogers in the second half sealed the defeat.

Potter will be hoping to secure his first win as manager when West Ham face Fulham at home in the Premier League on January 14.

In related news, Potter’s appointment has reportedly left one West Ham player’s future at the club in doubt.
