Paul Merson has shared his score prediction for the upcoming Arsenal vs. Tottenham Hotspur match, stating that victory is more crucial for Arsenal than for Spurs.
Tottenham’s Inconsistent Performances Are Costing Them Points
Tottenham’s erratic performances this season have been a major issue. While they’ve secured impressive wins over Manchester City, Aston Villa, and West Ham, they’ve also suffered surprising 1-0 defeats to Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth, and Crystal Palace.
This inconsistency was evident in their last two games. After a surprising 1-0 win over Premier League leaders Liverpool in the Carabao Cup, they struggled in a goalless draw against Tamworth, currently 16th in the National League.
The Premier League has been especially concerning for Spurs, having lost three of their last four matches. Their most recent victory came in mid-December with a 5-0 thrashing of Southampton.
Paul Merson Expects Arsenal to Win Against Spurs
Tottenham will need to overcome Arsenal to end their winless league run, but Merson believes his former club will secure all three points against Spurs, describing them as an “up and down” team. He also mentioned that Spurs’ focus should be on winning a trophy.
Writing on Sportskeeda, Merson said: “What I saw yesterday [Arsenal’s loss to Manchester United] was shocking. I can’t believe they were knocked out of the FA Cup! It’s unfortunate that Gabriel Jesus got injured, but it should now prompt Mikel Arteta to buy a centre-forward. They urgently need someone to lead the attack, and they need him fast. They either need to break the bank for Alexander Isak or move quickly to sign Omar Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt before Manchester City does.
“Isak’s performance against Arsenal was a perfect example. He barely touched the ball but still scored with one chance. Arsenal’s forwards, by contrast, need multiple chances to score. I expect Arsenal to beat Spurs, but they really need a new striker.
“Spurs are too inconsistent, and I don’t see them winning here. For Ange Postecoglou, winning a trophy is key to keeping his job. If they finish eighth in the Premier League but win the Carabao Cup, where they hold a 1-0 advantage going into the second leg at Anfield, that would still be a positive outcome. After all, some top teams might finish in the top four without winning a trophy, and Spurs have never won anything!
“If Arsenal win and Forest manage to get a draw or win against Liverpool, the gap at the top won’t seem so large. Liverpool’s game in hand against Everton, now under David Moyes, could result in a draw, giving Arsenal a real chance. It all starts with a win against Spurs.”
Arsenal’s Goal Scoring Issues
Merson also pointed out Arsenal’s lack of strong attacking options, which has been a concern recently. Although the Gunners have scored more goals than all but Liverpool and Tottenham in the Premier League this season, they’ve had several matches where they’ve failed to score. Additionally, they’ve only managed to score twice in their last three games across all competitions.
Spurs eventually managed to break through against Tamworth in extra time and will need players like Dominic Solanke and Brennan Johnson to be clinical if they’re to secure a rare victory at the Emirates.
