“They had more shots but we stayed in the game and get them defeated this weekend”- Jimmy Thelin responds to Rangers defeat and admits Aberdeen’s winless run must end on Saturday
Aberdeen manager Jimmy Thelin has acknowledged that a win over Elgin City this weekend is crucial as his team looks to end their challenging run of results.
After starting the season with 15 wins from their first 16 games, Aberdeen have not won since a 4-1 victory over Dundee on November 9.
Their winless streak now stands at 12 matches following a 3-0 defeat to Rangers, which leaves them 12 points adrift of the Ibrox side.
At one point, Aberdeen were nine points ahead of Rangers after a 2-1 win over them in October.
Despite being in the game until added time in their latest meeting, goals from Leon Balogun and Cyriel Dessers, following Hamza Igamane’s opener, sealed a dominant victory for Rangers, leaving Aberdeen desperate to turn their season around.
Thelin’s side now travels to Elgin City in the Scottish Cup on Saturday, where a loss is simply not an option. “We have to find a way back quickly and get a result to push through this difficult period,” said Thelin, who is actively working to strengthen his squad.
New additions such as on-loan Spurs defender Alfie Dorrington, who made his debut as a substitute against Rangers, and fellow debutants Alexander Jensen, Kristers Tobers, and Jeppe Okkels, all started the match.
“We tried to stay competitive against Rangers,” Thelin explained. “They had more shots, but we remained in the game until the very end. Even when we didn’t have the rhythm, we kept fighting until the final whistle.
The players come from various backgrounds; some are transitioning between seasons and haven’t had a proper pre-season. They need time to build resilience and avoid injuries, but getting game time will be beneficial.”
The manager continued, “Every game is important for us, and we have to win on Saturday. After that, we have time to prepare for the league match against St Mirren next week.
The cup is another important competition, and we need to progress—it’s crucial for our reputation.”
Reflecting on the current difficult run, Thelin admitted, “It’s tough when you look at the results, but we have to think long-term and stay confident in what we’re doing. We’re facing challenges right now, but I believe we will find a way out of this and become a more stable team.”
