Emmanuel Petit has expressed doubts about whether David Moyes made the right decision in returning to Everton.
The Friedkin Group dismissed Sean Dyche ahead of the Toffees’ FA Cup match against Peterborough. The new owners quickly appointed Moyes, bringing him back to Goodison Park after 12 years away, hoping he can help turn the club’s fortunes around.
Speaking on talkSPORT (16 January, 11:07am), Petit acknowledged the significant challenge Moyes faces in saving the club from relegation, particularly due to their struggles with scoring goals.
Petit said: “It’s like divorcing someone and then going back to them after 10 years. I don’t like this idea or the feeling, especially given the situation surrounding Everton. There are so many issues both on and off the pitch. They’re planning a new stadium and fighting relegation. They’re not winning games or scoring goals, and we all know that to survive in the Premier League, you have to win and score. The confidence isn’t there, and Everton has been near the relegation zone for years. Something has to change soon.”
While Petit’s concerns are valid, it’s clear that simply hiring Moyes won’t be enough to solve Everton’s problems. The Toffees are currently just one point above the relegation zone, and if their form doesn’t improve, they risk being pulled into it.
A fresh start was likely needed at Goodison Park, and while Dyche did his best under tough circumstances, it felt like both sides needed to part ways. Moyes, however, brings optimism, with his past success at the club and the backing of new owners, which could help lift morale among fans.
With the transfer window open, Moyes has no time to waste in strengthening his squad. If he fails to do so, it could tarnish his legacy at the club.
