JUST IN; Leeds United poised to hijack Wolves striker transfer as lethal 42-goal Premier League forward plans move
Wolves are reportedly interested in signing a 55-time international forward with a strong Premier League record as they look to strengthen their attack this January.
Championship contenders Leeds United have also entered the race to sign one of Wolves’ key striker targets, adding competition for the forward’s signature.
Wolves are eager to enhance their attacking options this month in a bid to avoid relegation to the Championship for the first time in seven years. Although Matheus Cunha, Jorgen Strand Larsen, and Hwang Hee-Chan already offer attacking options, the club is still in search of additional reinforcements to aid their survival hopes. One of their key targets is Kelechi Iheanacho, who recently left Leicester City for Sevilla after seven years in the Premier League.
Iheanacho, with 42 goals in 196 Premier League appearances, joined Sevilla in the summer as part of a move from Leicester City. The 55-time Nigerian international had expressed his excitement about joining Sevilla, vowing to help take the team to greater heights, particularly after joining as a potential replacement for Youssef En-Nesyri. However, his time in Spain has been less successful, with only 11 appearances across all competitions, three of which were goals in the Copa Del Rey. He has started just five league games, with his last La Liga appearance coming in early December.
Sevilla are reportedly open to loaning Iheanacho out in January, with a potential option to buy in the summer. Leeds United are currently leading the race for his signature, with Wolves and Ipswich Town also showing interest.
Should Wolves pursue Kelechi Iheanacho?
Iheanacho made an early impact at Manchester City during the 2015/16 season, impressing as an understudy to Sergio Aguero. His £25m move to Leicester City in 2017 was seen as a major coup, but despite scoring crucial goals, he never fully lived up to expectations. Over his seven years at Leicester, Iheanacho scored 61 goals and provided 34 assists in 232 appearances, with a standout 2020/21 season where he netted 19 goals across all competitions and helped the club win their first FA Cup.
In recent seasons, however, injury issues have limited his impact, and he has struggled to surpass five league goals in the past three years. While a loan move to Wolves could provide some much-needed cover, the club should perhaps consider other transfer options first.
