Every January, there’s usually a transfer saga that captures the attention of Sunderland fans. This year, there are two: Enzo Le Fee and Tom Cannon. It now seems we’re close to a final decision regarding Cannon’s potential move to the Stadium of Light.
Cannon, a striker long targeted by Sunderland’s Kristjaan Speakman, has been on the Black Cats’ radar for the past three transfer windows.
He recently returned to Leicester after an impressive loan spell at Stoke City, where he scored nine goals in 22 Championship appearances during the first half of the 2024/25 season.
Both Sheffield United and Sunderland have since been linked with the 22-year-old, with both clubs reportedly willing to pay £13million to secure his signature, a deal that could have a significant impact on the Championship title race.
However, it now appears Sunderland have been outbid in the race for Cannon.
Sheffield United to Win Cannon Signing Race
According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Sheffield United are set to win the battle for Cannon, with a deal expected to be completed on Tuesday (January 21st) for a fee around £10million.
Sunderland’s only confirmed signing in the January window remains Le Fee, but the club is clearly still keen to add another striker to their ranks.
After Aaron Connolly’s move to Millwall, Sunderland are left with just Wilson Isidor up front.
Matija Frigan Linked with Sunderland
Despite missing out on Cannon, Sunderland fans may not be too surprised, as reports have emerged linking them with Matija Frigan, a Croatian striker currently with Westerlo in Belgium.
Sunderland is reportedly close to securing a loan-to-buy deal for Frigan, which could exceed £12million.
There’s anticipation that this deal could be finalized before Sunderland’s match against Derby County on Tuesday night.
Cannon’s move to Sheffield United may accelerate Sunderland’s pursuit of Frigan, as the club looks to strengthen its attacking options.
The match against Derby County is set to kick off at 7:45pm on Tuesday.
