“What a regret for Rangers, selling a player who has now become world-class. Imagine if he had stayed at the club.” Rangers have already parted ways with their own Lyall Cameron, who has since blossomed into a “world-class” talent.
Rangers made their first signing of the January transfer window during halftime of their Scottish Cup match against Fraserburgh, unveiling Rafael Fernandes to the Ibrox crowd. The 22-year-old defender joins on a six-month loan from Lille, with the option for Rangers to make the deal permanent in the summer.
This move could prove to be a savvy decision. If Fernandes performs well, manager Philippe Clement will have the opportunity to secure his signature for the long term. If not, Fernandes will return to his parent club, Lille.
However, one signing is unlikely to be enough for Rangers, especially if they aim to push for the Scottish Cup and make a deep run in the Europa League.
While numerous players have been linked with a move to Ibrox, much will depend on Clement’s budget and whether he has sufficient funds to sign players permanently.
Looking ahead to the summer, Clement is also keeping an eye on several players whose contracts expire at the end of the season, making them eligible to sign pre-contract agreements as of this month. One such player is midfielder Lyall Cameron, who could provide a valuable addition to the squad.
Rangers Eye Lyall Cameron Move
Rangers are reportedly interested in the Dundee midfielder, who has impressed this season. Despite being offered a new contract by Dundee, Cameron is expected to leave Dens Park soon, and it remains to be seen whether Rangers will make a move this month or secure him with a summer transfer.
Cameron has been in outstanding form, registering eight goals and seven assists in 28 appearances across all competitions this season. His stats highlight his ability to contribute offensively, with 1.6 key passes per game and 1.5 shots per game in the Premiership. Additionally, Cameron has demonstrated his defensive prowess, winning 3.8 duels and making 5.4 ball recoveries per game.
These all-around qualities make him an appealing prospect for Clement, who is keen to bolster his midfield options. While there are other talented players in similar positions, such as Nico Raskin and Mohamed Diomande, adding more homegrown Scottish talent like Cameron could be crucial for Rangers, especially with European competitions in mind.
Rangers’ Missed Opportunity with Billy Gilmour
Cameron’s situation inevitably brings to mind the story of Billy Gilmour, who left Rangers for Chelsea in 2017. Gilmour, a talented midfielder with technical ability and potential, went on to win the Champions League with Chelsea and has since thrived in Serie A with Napoli. Rangers have produced numerous top-class midfielders over the years, but Gilmour’s departure remains one of the club’s biggest missed opportunities.
Had Gilmour stayed at Ibrox, it’s possible he could have reached similar heights as Cameron, though his move to Chelsea undoubtedly fast-tracked his development. Now, with Cameron potentially on the move to Rangers, the club may have another chance to nurture a talented Scottish midfielder and help him reach his full potential.
It’s now up to Clement and Nils Koppen to secure a deal for Cameron before another club swoops in, as missing out on him could be a mistake Rangers regret in the future.
