‘Agreed’ – Newcastle United strike first major January transfer deal for £21m Champions League goal hero
Newcastle United have agreed a £10million fee with Atlanta United for Miguel Almiron as the January transfer window nears its end.
This deal marks Newcastle’s first significant move of the transfer window, with Almiron set to return to his former club. The Paraguayan originally joined Newcastle from Atlanta in 2019 for a reported club-record fee of £21million.
After six years, 222 appearances, and 30 goals for the Magpies—including scoring the club’s first Champions League goal in over 20 years in their 4-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain in 2023—Almiron is now on the verge of a move back to Major League Soccer. The Telegraph reports that Newcastle and Atlanta have agreed on the transfer fee, but personal terms between the player and the club have yet to be finalized.
While there’s no indication that personal terms will be a significant hurdle, the deal has taken longer to materialize since initial talks began around two weeks ago. Almiron has continued to train and remain a part of Newcastle’s matchday squad.
Almiron was an unused substitute in Newcastle’s 4-1 loss to Bournemouth last weekend, a match that was expected to be his final appearance at St James’ Park. However, he trained ahead of the upcoming Southampton match on Saturday.
Ahead of the game, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe confirmed that Almiron is still part of his plans for the time being.
“Miggy’s mindset has been excellent,” Howe said when asked for an update on Almiron. “He’s been fantastic in training, and I haven’t seen any signs that suggest I need to address anything with him. We’re both aware of the situation, and while there’s interest from other clubs and a potential move could happen before the window closes, he remains a valuable part of the squad for now.”
Newcastle’s squad flew to Southampton on Friday afternoon ahead of the match, with the team aiming for their 10th win in 11 matches as they face the Premier League’s bottom team this weekend.
