Thomas Frank praised Jean-Philippe Mateta after the win. Speaking to Sky Sports (via BBC Sport), Frank said: “It was a very even game between two strong teams.
We defended well and didn’t give much away. Mateta is tough to handle, but we dealt with their front three effectively.
It was a solid performance.” Mateta, in good form with four goals in his last three Premier League matches, couldn’t extend his run, despite a solid effort.
In a bizarre turn of events, Mbeumo initially missed his penalty, but the referee, Tony Harrington, allowed him to retake it after VAR spotted Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi encroaching.
The rule is that if the penalty taker touches the ball again before it’s touched by another player, the goal doesn’t count.
If Mbeumo had simply tapped in the rebound unchallenged, the goal would’ve been disallowed. Interestingly, Guehi may have helped Brentford by leaving the ball for Mbeumo, who would have been penalized for playing the rebound prematurely.
