Nottingham Forest boasts a wealth of talent in their attacking ranks, which has been crucial in their impressive bid for a Champions League spot by the end of the 2024/25 season.
Chris Wood has been the standout performer, netting 14 goals and contributing two assists in all competitions this season.
In addition to Wood, three other attackers have also shone. Morgan Gibbs-White has scored four goals and provided four assists across all competitions.
Anthony Elanga has had an excellent season with eight goal contributions, while Callum Hudson-Odoi has registered five goals and assists.
Given this attacking strength, it’s concerning for the rest of the Premier League that Forest is now targeting two more attackers.
Forest’s Two Transfer Targets
As the transfer window nears its end on February 3rd, Forest seems keen on adding two attacking players. One of their main targets is Matheus Cunha of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
According to the Mail, signing the Brazilian will cost £70m. Despite Wolves’ struggles near the relegation zone, Cunha has been outstanding, with 10 goals and four assists in 22 Premier League appearances this season. His arrival would undoubtedly boost Forest’s attacking power.
The other target is Yoane Wissa from Brentford. Football Insider reports that Forest made a £22m bid for the forward last week, and while Brentford is reluctant to sell, another offer may be forthcoming.
Wissa has had a strong season, scoring 11 goals and providing two assists in 20 Premier League matches, including a goal and assist in the opening 2-1 win over Crystal Palace. He could be a valuable addition to complement Wood’s contributions.
If Forest secures either or both of these deals, they may need to free up room in their wage budget. One potential candidate for departure is James Ward-Prowse, who commands a high salary.
James Ward-Prowse’s Role at Forest
Ward-Prowse joined Forest on a season-long loan from West Ham United last summer, with no option to make the deal permanent, which Forest might now be thankful for.
The England international has struggled for playing time under Nuno Espirito Santo, making only 12 appearances and playing a total of 483 minutes—equivalent to just over five full matches.
He has registered one assist in the 3-0 win at Wolves, providing a selfless pass to Taiwo Awoniyi. Despite being renowned for his lethal set-piece deliveries, Ward-Prowse has not had many opportunities in the Forest side this season.
In fact, Jamie Carragher even called him “arguably the best set-piece taker in the Premier League” last season. His dead-ball ability could be a key asset, especially with players like Wood and defender Murillo in the team.
However, Ward-Prowse is currently the highest earner at Forest, with a wage of £115k-per-week, totaling £5.98m per year—more than the combined wages of Cunha and Wissa.
Given Ward-Prowse’s hefty salary, Forest may decide to cut his loan short to make room for new signings.
Ending his deal early could provide the financial flexibility to bring in both Cunha and Wissa, which would strengthen their attack and further their push for a top-four finish and Champions League qualification.
