Kris Boyd has expressed some sympathy for Nick Walsh over his decision to send off Rangers midfielder Mohamed Diomande during the match against Dundee United.
The former Ibrox striker questioned whether Diomande truly deserved a red card for his clash with Kevin Holt but acknowledged that the referee was let down by the lack of sufficient VAR support.
Walsh issued a red card to Diomande in the final moments of the Scottish Premiership match at Tannadice, accusing him of slapping Holt. Rangers appealed the decision, and the Scottish FA later rescinded the red card after a fast-track tribunal.
Describing the situation as “strange,” Boyd pointed out that Walsh had limited views of the incident and suggested he might not have been given enough angles to make a fair decision, which contributed to his sympathy for the referee.
Boyd had initially criticized the decision as “embarrassing,” but on The Scottish Sun’s Go Ballistic podcast, he said, “It was a strange one. I’m glad it’s been overturned, and Diomande can continue playing because he’s been a key player for Rangers.
“Regarding the incident itself, I can understand why Nick Walsh gave the red card based on the angle he saw. But when he went to the monitor, it was essentially the same angle. He didn’t get a better view.
“In some ways, I do feel a bit of sympathy for Nick Walsh since he didn’t see any other angles… so the question is, did VAR do its job properly? Probably not.
“From the angle Walsh had, it looked like Kevin Holt’s head didn’t move. But if you start handing out cards, Declan Gallagher was also involved and already booked, and Holt himself had a couple of shoves. Yet, none of them got booked, and Diomande was sent off. I’m just glad it was overturned, and someone used common sense.”
