It was a tough evening of football last night as Celtic battled Aston Villa.
The Hoops were incredibly unlucky during an action-packed night at Villa Park. Despite being 2-0 down, they quickly fought back to make it 2-2 in just four minutes.
Adam Idah ended his scoring drought after several months, showing he hadn’t lost his confidence, nor had manager Brendan Rodgers lost faith in him.
However, in the second half, Ollie Watkins put Villa ahead with a third goal. Watkins also missed a big opportunity to seal the win, adding even more drama to the Champions League tie.
In the end, it didn’t affect the result much for Unai Emery’s side. Rodgers took advantage of a mistake by substitute Dane Murray, allowing him to score a hat-trick, but the penalty decision during the match was a point of contention.
Auston Trusty brought down Watkins, but he appeared to get some of the ball as well. Despite this, referee Clement Turpin awarded a penalty, and VAR didn’t intervene.
Co-commentator Neil Lennon, speaking on TNT Sports, thought the decision was harsh, as Trusty had clearly played the ball.
Lennon commented on the incident: “I thought he got some of the ball, and he gets his body across. Did he get the man first, then the ball? It’s a tough call. I don’t think it’s a clear and obvious error, I just think Trusty does enough to play the ball. Even Watkins’ reaction seems a bit unsure, and Trusty’s in disbelief. I can understand why. It’s a soft decision.”
Regarding Watkins’ missed chance, Lennon remarked: “Wow, this game’s had everything. That miss is incredible, and it’ll be shown for years.
I think his left foot gave way. He slipped, and his right foot hit the ball off his left. Absolutely incredible. It’s a big break for Celtic, and maybe they’ll feel like justice has been done.”
